Nepal reaffirms zero-tolerance policy on corruption at UN Conference

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 17 The government has reaffirmed its firm commitment to launching a nationwide campaign against corruption to strengthen integrity and good governance. Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Gobinda Bahadur Karkee, committed while addressing a session of the 11th Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday. The session was held under the theme 'Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity.' In his address, Secretary Karkee stated that the current government has adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption and is pursuing comprehensive legal, administrative, and institutional reforms. He highlighted initiatives undertaken following the historic public movement that led to the formation of the interim government, with a focus on good governance and corruption control. He informed the global forum that Nepal has criminalised bribery, abuse of authority, illicit enrichment, money laundering and related offences in line with UNCAC provisions. Karkee also reaffirmed Nepal's commitment to the convention and outlined progress on fulfilling obligations under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Action Plan, along with the finalisation of the Second National Strategy and Action Plan against Corruption. The UNCAC conference, which began on Tuesday, is regarded as the world's largest global forum dedicated to combating corruption. (With inputs from RSS)
