KATHMANDU, JANUARY 5 The number of people suffering from seasonal influenza and cold-related illnesses has increased across districts of Koshi Province, doctors said, attributing the rise to falling temperatures. Senior physician at Koshi Hospital Dr Roshan Khadka said hospitals have seen a surge in patients with headaches, colds, and respiratory complaints following severe cold spells. 'In winter, blood vessels constrict as body temperature drops, reducing blood flow to the head and causing persistent headaches,' he explained. Dr Khadka added that dehydration is another major cause of winter headaches. Children are also reporting symptoms such as sore eyes, nasal congestion, sore throat, breathing difficulties, and diarrhoea. Seasonal influenza, a viral infection transmitted through breathing, poses higher risks to the elderly, chronically ill, malnourished children, and patients with diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Doctors have advised influenza vaccination as an effective preventive measure. (With inputs from RSS)
