KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 17 The Kaski District Court has decided not to proceed with immediate hearings in the organised crime and money laundering case against Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), pending a ruling from the Supreme Court. The order followed a hearing on Monday regarding an application filed by the District Government Attorney's Office seeking to withdraw the organised crime and money laundering charges. Court clerk Rajan Khanal confirmed that the case has been 'put on hold' for the time being. The move comes after the Attorney General's Office decided to withdraw the charges against Lamichhane. Acting on that decision, the District Government Attorney's Office formally petitioned the Kaski District Court to terminate the case. However, the bench of District Judge Nitish Rai ruled that further proceedings would only take place once the Supreme Court issues an order, as a writ petition has been filed challenging the Attorney General's decision to withdraw the case. Lamichhane had been charged in connection with the Surya Darshan Cooperative fraud case in Pokhara, facing allegations of cooperative fraud, organised crime and money laundering. The Supreme Court's eventual ruling is expected to determine whether the withdrawal stands or whether trial proceedings will resume, a development likely to carry both legal and political ramifications.
