KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 22 The Election Commission (EC) continues its nationwide voter education program with the aim of promoting greater electoral participation and reducing the incidence of invalid votes. The program also seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of voting rights and the voting process. According to the Commission, one voter education volunteer has been deployed in each of the 6,743 wards across the country's 753 local levels, from February 15 to March 1. The volunteers are reaching settlements and doorsteps of voters, educating them about the significance of the election and demonstrating the voting process using sample ballot papers. In addition, the Commission has appointed focal points at the local level to monitor the voter education program, and the corresponding orientation program for volunteers has been completed. The Commission is also making concerted efforts to monitor individuals spreading false or misleading information and hate speech in violation of the election code of conduct, and to ensure that individuals and organizations committing illegal acts are brought under the ambit of the law in coordination with relevant regulatory bodies. To facilitate this, the Information Ethics Promotion Unit, operating under the Election Information Dissemination and Coordination Center, is fully functional. Meanwhile, 290 content producers and communicators who disseminated harmful information have been reported to the Cyber Bureau of the Nepal Police for action under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. Additionally, 11 individuals have been recommended for action to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority under the Telecommunications Authority Act, 2052. Furthermore, 65 individuals have been referred to the Press Council, Nepal, for action under the Press Council Act, 2048, and one case has been forwarded for action under the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2076, the Commission stated.
