Role of media in promoting women entrepreneurship discusses

KATHMANDU, MARCH 30 Sancharika Samuha Nepal organized an interaction with experts in here to discuss the role of media in promoting women entrepreneurship. The program included extensive discussions on how much priority mainstream media has given to issues related to women entrepreneurs. According to a six-month study report presented at the programme, topics related to women vary across different provinces. In Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces, issues like chhaupadi and health are more commonly covered, whereas in other provinces, entrepreneurship, digital business, and political participation receive more attention. It was shared that Sancharika Samuha, with support from GIZ Nepal, has published 21 fellowship stories titled 'Entrepreneur Women,' based on the struggles and successes of women entrepreneurs across the country. Hari Bahadur Thapa, Editor-in-Chief of Baahrakhari, stated that in a context where political topics dominate media coverage, bringing inspiring stories of women entrepreneurs into the mainstream is a positive step. Woman entrepreneur Shyam Vadan Shrestha said women entrepreneurs are not given adequate space in the media. She emphasized the need for encouragement and support from media in market promotion. Human rights activist Charan Prasai stressed that issues related to women entrepreneurship should be raised from a human rights perspective. Babita Basnet, advisor and former president of Sancharika Samuha, emphasized prioritizing the promotion of women entrepreneurship through digital platforms. She said that stories of struggles in small enterprises can be widely disseminated through digital media. Kamala Panthi, President of Sancharika Samuha Nepal, stated that media still tends to prioritize negative topics such as violence, rape, and allegations over stories of women's success. The programme was attended by 21 fellows, editors, mentors, civil society representatives, advocates, and women entrepreneurs.
