KATHMANDU, APRIL 9 Kathmandu Metropolitan City has decided to launch a 'Vehicle-Free Asan' campaign from April 18, aiming to preserve the cultural identity of the historic market area and promote social, cultural and commercial activities. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, with participation of municipal officials, ward representatives, security agencies, and local stakeholders. The programme was postponed by a week to ensure better preparation. Under the initiative, vehicular movement will be restricted every Saturday in key stretches including Kamalachi Chowk–Asan, Bhotahiti–Asan, and Mahabouddha–Asan areas. Alternative routes will be arranged for vehicles. Officials said the programme aims to revitalise Asan as a vibrant hub of religious, cultural and commercial activities while preserving its historical significance. Authorities also expect the move to help control air pollution and improve the urban environment. Ward Chair Yogesh Khadgi said the initiative, driven by local communities and organisations, will support traditional businesses and enhance the area's heritage value. Security agencies, including the Kathmandu Valley Police Office and traffic police, have committed to ensuring smooth pedestrian management and safety during the programme. The metropolitan police force has been assigned responsibility for managing and implementing the campaign, which also envisions developing the area as a heritage corridor with regular cultural and community events.
