KATHMANDU, MAY 1 Multiple national and international observances-including the 2570th Buddha Jayanti, Ubhauli Parva of the Kirant community, and the 137th International Workers' Day-are being marked across Nepal on Friday with various programmes and rituals. Buddha Jayanti, commemorating the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Gautam Buddha, is being observed with reverence across the country. Born in Lumbini to King Suddhodhan and Queen Mayadevi, Buddha is regarded as a global messenger of peace and non-violence. On the occasion, devotees are offering prayers and performing rituals at monasteries, chaityas and viharas, while major celebrations are taking place at Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupa, among other sites. The day, which falls on the full moon of Baishakh, is observed by Buddhists worldwide seeking peace and harmony. Coinciding with Buddha Jayanti, the Kirant community is celebrating Ubhauli Parva, marking the beginning of the agricultural season. The festival involves worship of land deity (Bhumesthan) and traditional Sakela dance performances. Celebrations are being held in various parts of Koshi Province and Kathmandu Valley, including Sakela sites in Lalitpur. According to the Kirant Mundhum, Ubhauli signifies the upward movement of people for farming activities and is observed for good harvest, prosperity and community well-being. Meanwhile, the 137th International Workers' Day is also being marked across Nepal and the world. The day commemorates the historic labour movement for workers' rights and dignity. In Nepal, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, in coordination with trade unions, employers and development partners, is organising programmes highlighting labour rights, fair wages and decent working conditions. The day has been observed globally since 1890 and is associated in Nepal with the historic labour movement in Biratnagar. Trade unions, including the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre, are holding events to advocate for workers' rights and welfare.
