KATHMANDU, MAY 8 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended that the government formulate a comprehensive action plan with short-, medium- and long-term measures to minimise the impact of ongoing tensions in West Asia. Unveiling a report prepared by an inter-ministerial high-level task force at a press conference on Friday, Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri said the evolving situation in West Asia could have wide-ranging implications for Nepal's economy and livelihoods. According to the report, the crisis carries both direct and indirect effects on sectors including agriculture, industry, tourism, trade, investment, foreign employment, remittances, foreign currency reserves and the balance of payments. It also warns of potential disruptions in the supply of energy, fuel, food and medicines. Chhetri said the Ministry is closely monitoring developments and stressed the need for timely policy-level interventions to cushion adverse impacts. 'The repercussions of conflicts often affect developing countries like Nepal in multiple ways and at different times,' he noted, underscoring the importance of preparedness. The report highlights that around 1.8 million Nepalis are employed in Gulf countries, making the region critical to Nepal's economy, particularly through remittance inflows. It cautions that instability in West Asia could directly affect the livelihoods of Nepali migrant workers and contribute to rising prices across various sectors. The Ministry has called for coordinated policy responses to ensure economic stability and protect vulnerable populations amid the evolving geopolitical situation.
