Govt allocates Rs 4.03 billion for sports sector, major infrastructure expansion planned

KATHMANDU, MAY 29 The government has allocated Rs 4.03 billion for the sports sector in the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 budget. Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle announced that athletes winning international medals will be provided lifelong free health treatment to ensure a dignified post-retirement life. The government has also outlined major infrastructure development plans in the sports sector. As per the budget, 10 stadiums with a seating capacity of 8,000 will be upgraded with floodlights within three years. Similarly, modern cricket stadiums will be constructed in eight major cities within five years. Indoor multipurpose stadiums with at least 2,000 seating capacity will be built within three years in Biratnagar, Lahan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Surkhet, and Dhangadhi's Fapla. The government will also review design and prepare investment modalities for the construction of Mulpani Cricket Stadium and Academy, Girija Prasad Koirala Cricket Stadium, and Fapla Stadium in Kailali. Talented and interested students will be selected from the basic school level for specialized residential sports training. The government has also allocated funds for the 11th National Games proposed to be held in Madhesh Province, following the completion of the 10th National Games in Surkhet.
