KATHMANDU, JULY 2 The Special Court on Thursday extended the remand of CPN-UML Vice-chair and former finance minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel by six days, allowing the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DMLI) to continue its investigation into a money laundering case. A joint bench of judges Hemanta Rawal, Dilliratna Shrestha and Umesh Koirala issued the order, marking the third extension of Paudel's remand since his arrest. Paudel was arrested in Surkhet on June 22 after the DMLI launched an investigation into alleged suspicious sources of wealth and share transactions. Investigators are also examining allegations that he abused his authority while serving as finance minister to facilitate businessman Deepak Bhatt's share purchases. The Special Court had earlier granted investigators an initial seven-day remand, followed by a three-day extension on June 29. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Paudel's wife, Domaya Paudel, challenging his detention as unlawful and seeking his immediate release.
