KATHMANDU, JULY 12 A video documenting Nepali mountaineer Gelje Sherpa's Mount Everest expedition, filmed using the Xiaomi 17 Ultra smartphone, has been released, showcasing footage captured in the extreme conditions of the world's highest peak. The video features scenes recorded by Sherpa during his ascent of Mt Everest in May 2026, including moments filmed in freezing temperatures, strong winds and low-oxygen conditions.
According to Xiaomi, the footage was captured entirely on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra smartphone without staged production or studio filming. The company said the video offers an authentic look at the challenges of high-altitude mountaineering. Sherpa, who holds several mountaineering records, including a Guinness World Record, documented his expedition using the smartphone, recording key moments throughout the climb.
Xiaomi said it chose Mount Everest as a real-world testing environment to demonstrate the camera performance, durability and reliability of its latest flagship device under extreme conditions. The company said the project was intended to highlight the smartphone's imaging capabilities while showcasing how mobile technology can be used to document expeditions in some of the world's most demanding environments. The video has now been made public through Xiaomi's official channels.
