RAMECHHAP, AUGUST 3 Rural villages across Ramechhap are steadily losing residents as migration in search of jobs, quality education and healthcare accelerates, leaving once-vibrant villages increasingly deserted. Locals said many villages that were once densely populated now come alive only during festivals and special occasions, with most families having relocated to district headquarters or larger cities for better opportunities and essential services. Residents attributed the trend to limited employment opportunities, low agricultural returns and inadequate access to basic public services, factors that have made it difficult for younger generations to remain in their ancestral villages. Keshari Shrestha, a resident of Chisapani in Manthali Municipality-8, said the initial wave of migration was driven by shortages of drinking water. In recent years, however, the lack of quality schools, reliable healthcare and local employment has become the main reason families are leaving. Another local, Rajkumar Shrestha, said traditional farming is no longer sustainable. Upland farms produce little, cultivation costs often exceed returns, and crops that do mature are frequently damaged by monkeys and other wild animals, discouraging farmers from continuing agriculture. With limited economic prospects and persistent challenges in agriculture, education and health services, younger people are increasingly choosing urban areas over village life. Residents said the exodus has not only reduced the population of rural communities but has also weakened traditional farming practices, social activities and the overall vitality of village life.
