From rice to apples, Rs 24b of farm goods enter via Kakarbhitta

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 23 Rice, pulses, tomatoes, apples and watermelons were among the agricultural products that helped push Nepal's imports through the Kakarbhitta border to Rs 24.26 billion last fiscal year. According to the Plant Quarantine Office, Kakarbhitta, agricultural products worth Rs 24.2674 billion entered Nepal through the eastern border in fiscal year 2025/26 from India, China, Australia and Bangladesh. The imports included food grains, pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits, with food grains and pulses accounting for the largest share, said office chief Nandakishor Singh. Among the major imports, Nepal brought in Rs 24.23 million worth of rice and Rs 188.3 million worth of millet from India. The country also imported 1,996 metric tonnes of chickpeas worth Rs 182.7999 million from Australia and India, while 796 metric tonnes of mung beans worth Rs 108.854 million came from Australia. The vegetable import basket was dominated by Indian produce. Nepal imported Rs 143.966 million worth of tomatoes, Rs 79.064 million worth of cucumbers and Rs 32.435 million worth of chillies during the year. Fruits imported through the border included apples, pineapples, watermelons and pears, mainly from India and China. Apples worth Rs 295.972 million were imported from the two countries, while watermelons worth Rs 142.481 million came from India. The figures from the Plant Quarantine Office cover agricultural products entering Nepal through the Kakarbhitta border during the last fiscal year.
