Madhes records 459 disasters in two months, 92 deaths

JANAKPURDHAM, OCTOBER 4 Madhes Province recorded 459 disaster incidents in the first two months of the current fiscal year, claiming 92 lives and affecting 510 families, according to the Madhes Province Police Office. Of those killed between mid-July and mid-September, 47 were men, 19 women and 28 children. Electric shocks accounted for the highest number of deaths at 39, followed by drowning at 29, wildlife attacks at five, lightning at three and fire at one. The remaining 13 deaths were attributed to other causes. The province recorded 112 fire incidents, 107 cases of electrocution, 37 drownings, 32 wildlife attacks, 12 floods and 10 lightning incidents during the period. The disasters caused property losses estimated at Rs29.24 million. Police spokesperson SSP Prabhu Prasad Dhakal said greater public awareness was needed to prevent fire and electrocution incidents. He said children remained particularly vulnerable to disasters, while drowning in ponds and other water bodies was common during the monsoon. A total of 2,869 police personnel have been mobilised for disaster response and rescue operations across the province's eight districts. (With inputs from RSas)
