UNMIN role under scanner in UN reps, NC leaders talks

By THT Online

KATHMANDU: Samuel Tamrat, director of the Asia and Pacific Division, Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations and UNMIN chief Karen Landgren on Friday held consultations with Nepali Congress acting president Sushil Koirala and Parliamentary Party (PP) leader Ram Chandra Poudel about UNMIN's role at the NC PP office in Kathmandu. 'We suggested that the UNMIN's role should be effective in monitoring PLA fighters as the constitution writing process is mainly related to their management,' said Poudel to media persons. The NC leaders told Tamrat and Landgren that the new constitution could not be promulgated leaving the task of managing combatants unfulfilled. 'The constitution can neither be promulgated nor be implemented in a situation of conflict before managing the combatants,' Poudel said. The NC leaders, during the meeting, expressed regret over the training being organised for the combatants by the Unified CPN-Maoist in cantonments and said it was a violation of the Comprehensive Peace Accord. They also requested the UN representatives to provide the government with the details of the combatants for the purpose of managing them. 'We also requested the UNMIN not to equate Nepali Army and the Maoist combatants,' Poudel said.
