Death toll crosses 2,791, thousands injured

KATHMANDU, April 26 The death toll from yesterday’s devastating earthquake measuring 7.6 on Richter scale has reached 2,791, National Emergency Operation Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs said. Search and rescue officials have counted the number of injured at more than 6,500. Kathmandu topped the death toll chart with 766, followed by Sindhupalchowk (662), Bhaktapur (219) and Dhading (199). The government has handed over as many as 519 bodies to their respected families in Kathmandu. The total number of affected districts is 34 from where deaths and injuries have been reported. In Ramechhap district, roof of at least 17 houses caved in. More than 90 per cent of houses were reported to have flattened in Barpak and Laprak VDCs of Gorkha. The course of the Macchi Khola has been blocked in Saurpani VDC of Gorkha due to landslide triggered by the massive earthquake. NEOC officials estimated that the death toll could cross 8,000 as the search and rescue operation to pull the dead and alive from the debris is still in progress. Meanwhile, an official said that the government was preparing to shift its focus to save the lives of thousands of injured, as there was a slim chance of rescuing many more people from the rubble of the collapsed structures.
