Jackie Chan in Capital to help quake-hit

KATHMANDU: Many sympathetic hearts around the world have been offering their help to quake-hit Nepalis. On this list are world’s renowned actors, with the recent star being Hong Kong’s celebrated actor, martial artist and action star Jackie Chan. The superstar, also very famous in Hollywood, was in the Capital on June 9 to distribute relief materials to people affected by the April 25 Gorkha earthquake and its aftershocks. Chan, the founder of Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Beijing (JCCFB), arrived here along with representatives of the Red Cross Society of China. The Police Story star, who landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in the morning, visited different places of Lalitpur and distributed relief materials to people there. Amidst his busy schedule, the Shanghai Noon famed actor met differently-abled people taking shelter under the tents managed by the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) in Jawalakhel and distributed relief materials. The kit with relief supplies includes— clothes, raincoat, blanket, sleeping bag along with other items essential for household uses and sanitary purposes, as per a press release issued by NRCS. The JCCFB has provided such kits for 5,000 quake-hit families through the Red Cross Society of China, the statement adds. “Jackie Chan made a symbolic distribution today, we will be distributing these kits to quake-hit districts after the needed assessment,” informed Dibya Raj Poudel, Humanitarian Values and Communications Head at NRCS. The Karate Kid actor also inspected the quake-affected area of Chyasal tole where he “urged the locals to stay safe and alert” as per Poudel. Along with distributing relief materials, Chan visited the NRCS central office. And he thanked everyone for providing him the opportunity to be in Nepal. “I would like to thank all of you for this opportunity and help,” the statement quotes Chan as saying. The ambassador of China Wu Chuntai was also present at the event.
