POKHARA: Mid-western Region won their maiden championship of the seventh President Running Shield here on Monday. Mid-west accumulated 242 points in the tournament to lift the trophy for the first time. Athletics coach Chandra Gurung said they were strong in athletics which gave them the title. Western Region came second with 197 points, while Central Region finished third with 169 points. Top three finishers were awarded with Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively. Sunil Chaudhary and Pramila Chaudhary — who bagged four gold medals each — of Mid-western Region were adjudged the best players of the meet. On the final day of the tournament, Ravi Lal Puri of Eastern finished first in boys’ 800m race with the timing of two minutes and 08.5 seconds, while Dhan Bahadur Shahu of Far-western and Prabhu Nath Kunwar of Western finished second and third respectively. In girls’ category, Gudiya Gupta of Western clinched gold after she completed the race in two minutes and 39.1 seconds, finishing ahead of Ashima Shrestha of Central and Manju BC of Mid-western. In girls’ 200m race, Pramila Chaudhary of Central won gold with the timing of 28.72 seconds, while Bindu Thapa of Western and Tara Malla of Mid-western completed the race in second and third positions respectively. In boys’ category, Sunil Chaudhary of Mid-western claimed gold in 23.91 seconds, while Subash Ratgaiya of Mid-western and Shakti Sapkota of Western came second and third respectively. In girls’ triple jump, Laxmi Shrestha of Eastern finished first with a distance of 9.21m, while Radha Chaudhary of Mid-western and Sundari Tharu of Western bagged silver and bronze respectively. In boys’ section, Bhuwan Mahato of Central covered 12.50m to win gold, ahead of Subash Ratgaiya of Mid-western and Shyam Chaudhary of Eastern. In volleyball, Western defeated Central 25-18, 25-18, 25-27, 26-28, 15-9 for the boys’ section gold, while Central avenged the loss beating Western 25-15, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 in girls’ section final. Kamal Sunar and Prativa Mali were named the best players of the tournament. Kaski CDO Krishna Bahadur Raut, Nepal APF’s SP Ganesh Sangraula, and Prakash Chandra Ghimire of NSC among others handed over prizes to the winners. A total of 370 players from five Regions competed for 48 gold medals in the three-day competition that featured athletics, volleyball, karate, whusu and taekwondo events.
