MAHENDRANAGAR: At least three houses were swept away while dozens of houses on the banks of Mahakali River are at a high risk of inundation as the incessant rainfall for last three days increased water level in the River. With the incessant rainfall since Wednesday, locals fear that the similar havoc as of 2013 monsoon may repeat this year. Floods in Mahakali River had killed many lives and destroyed property worth millions of rupees in Darchula district in the monsoon two years ago. Three houses in Bangabagar, Api Municipality-11 of Darchula district were swept away by the flood today. Locals informed that houses of Ganesh Singh Bohara, Harak Singh Bohara and Gajai Singh Bohara were swept by the River. DSP Nain Singh Karki of Darchula District Police Office, however, said only one house was swept away by the River. The flood, however, has not caused any human casualty in the region. Local Kailapal School has been shut for five days as the school building was at the risk of being swept away. More than 150 houses were swept away by the River in 2013. More than 200 families were displaced. SI Rajendra Chand at the Gaddachauki Area Police Post said the water flow in the River has been recorded at 240,880 cusec, on Friday afternoon. Various places of Kanchanpur district including Mahendranagar, Doda, Sunwara, Syali and Jogbuda were inundated. Meanwhile, construction of embankment along the River has been halted after the flood. The Sharada Barrage Bridge at the Indo-Nepal border has been closed, affecting hundreds of vehicles. Meanwhile, police said at least 74 houses were inundated in various places of Bardiya district.
