NBA recommends Shrestha for Judicial Council membership

KATHMANDU: Nepal Bar Association (NBA) today elected Senior Advocate Ram Prasad Shrestha as its nominee to the Judicial Council. The NBA was supposed to nominate a lawyer to the JC immediately after its nominee Upendra Keshari Neupane resigned from the post in January this year. The umbrella organisation of Nepali lawyers, however, could nominate Shrestha only today. Shrestha, a leftist lawyer, was elected by the democratic panel-dominated NBA. According to NBA Secretary General Sunil Kumar Shrestha, Ram Prasad Shrestha received 10 votes and his nearest rival Babu Raja Joshi from the democratic panel got only six votes. Another democratic candidate Senior Advocate Beni Bahadur Karki did not get vote. The NBA President Hari Krishna Karki who could make change the decision chose not to vote. According to the NBA source, three democratic office-bearers Mohan Ingnam, Prashanna Krishna Das and Binita Karki voted for Shrestha. Binita Karki did not even vote for her father Beni Bahadur Karki. The NBA has nine executive members from democratic panel and eight from the left panel.
