Demonstration against splitting Rukum district into two states

RUKUM: Locals on Sunday staged a demonstration at Musikot, the district headquarters of Rukum against the decision of the major political parties to divide the district into two states. The demonstration was organised accusing the parties of splitting the district into two states by bulldozing the sentiments of the people. According to the decision, the northern part of the district will be a part of state no. 6 and other parts will be included in state no. 5. Locals have demanded to include the whole district in state no. 5. Dhabit Dahal, a representative of the Civil Society Rukum chapter warned that they would come up with stern protest if the parties did not correct their decision. 'To divide the district is to erase the history of us,' he said, adding,' We will not accept the decision at any cost.' There are altogether 41 VDCs and one municipality in the district. Locals stated that the decision would also be a challenge for lawmakers Janardan Sharma, Ganeshman Pun, Daljit Sepayeli and Mithu Malla who represented the district in the Constituent Assembly. A sea of people took part in the demonstration organised by the Civil Society. The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) Rukum chapter among others also expressed their solidarity to the protest. Similarly, lawmakers of the Rukum and Salyan have also drawn attention of the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee (CPDCC) to include both the districts in the state no.5.
