New beginning, greater responsibility
New beginning, greater responsibility

The set of laws and principles included in new stature has secured the fundamental rights and interests of every citizen Kathmandu We are receiving greetings from around the globe as our political leaders succeeded to fulfill the long cherished dream of the promulgation of the constitution. Around 90 per cent of law-makers endorsed the new constitution. This has happened for the very first time in Nepali history. It is truly a new beginning. It is strongly believed that this event ended a decade long political transition and logically concluded the peace process which has paves the way to political stability, peace and prosperity. Almost every citizen welcomed it by carrying out rallies and lighting candles across the country except few parts in Tarai. In many ways, the set of laws and principles included in the new stature has secured the fundamental rights and interests of every citizen. Perhaps, it opens the door to development. Now, what next? What should be the next move? Undoubtedly, it is the action based upon clear vision and direction. The new beginning demands greater determination and responsibility — the responsibility to contribute to nation’s GDP and to be involved in development activities. I found the tweets of Professor Subas KC of KUSOM really thoughtful — “National constitution is, of course, welcome; mental constitution of the leadership is not! Change in both is needed, more urgently and substantially in the later than in the former.” Responsibility is the ability to respond. It requires pertinent information, awareness, independent will and courage to take action. As politicians are given exclusive rights they should upgrade their existing capacity to respond. Nepal materially rich with abundant resources is also spiritually affluent. Yet, the majority of people live in economic deprivation. The foundation of peace and prosperity is fostering economic activities. The government should trace out all the barriers that exacerbate such activities. Meanwhile, it needs to find out the factors that improve investment and entrepreneurial activities. To investigate these things in a systematic and well planned way, we need to create institutions and ‘think tanks’ to employ where and what is needed. Next to poverty, a chronic disease we are suffering from is corruption. Hopefully, this disease will soon be eradicated. Smooth and supportive public service delivery is a crucial aspect in creating friendly environment for economic activities. Perhaps, the most significant element for prosperity is ensuring involvement of each individual in contributing to GDP. We have a huge opportunity to create value for people within the territory and outside as well. In conclusion, it is the right time leaders and managers in every field, shape and channel the energy that everyone is filled with as we mark the huge achievement that will foster collaborative effort and raise productivity. Ultimately, it will craft the progress. To enjoy the political, socio-cultural and economic freedom, the constitution has provided a clear road map, however, the freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. As Austrian bestselling author Viktor Frankyl argues that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.
