Subversion case filed against match-fixing accused footballers

KATHMANDU: Police presented five footballers who face treason charges for alleged match-fixing in international games that Nepal played have been presented before the Special Court in the Capital on Sunday. Police filed a subversion ('rastra biplav') case against them, as per Section 3.3.1 of the Crime against State and Punishment Act, 1989. The Section says, 'If someone causes or attempts to cause any disorder with an intention to jeopardise sovereignty, integrity or national unity of Nepal, he/she shall be liable for life imprisonment.' The Court had extended the judicial remand of suspended skipper of Nepal’s national team Sagar Thapa, his deputy Sandip Rai, goalkeeper Ritesh Thapa, and former defenders Bikash Singh Chhetri and Anjan KC on November 1 till yesterday. The footballers were arrested from different parts of the Kathmandu Valley on October 14 before the Dashain vacation and presented before the Special Court on October 27. After their arrest, ANFA suspended the footballers from all football-related activities until the full investigation. Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also followed the suit and provisionally suspended the footballers for 30 days. The AFC further wrote to FIFA seeking worldwide ban on them. Meanwhile, the Court ordered police to present the accused at 10 am on Monday as the proceedings could not be held today for lack of time.
