KATHMANDU: As a part of the Run the World Challenge campaign, a British national is all set to run 10 kilometres in Kathmandu on November 11. The run is scheduled to start at 3 pm on November 11 from the Park Village Resort, Budhanilakantha. Dan Thompson, a British businessman and sports enthusiast, started and undertook the challenge to run 10km in every country of the world by 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Kathmandu-based British Embassy said in a statement today. He intends to promote the benefits of sports and physical activity and collect fund for Cancer Research UK, according to the statement. “I recently lost my mother to cancer,” Thompson shared. He added, “I’m very much looking forward to running in Nepal and hope that as many people as possible will join me on the runs. I’d like to stress that everyone is welcome to take part - irrespective of their level of fitness or running speed. Participants are also welcome to run part of the way, join in on bike or just come along and support the runners!” The Cancer Research UK is a pioneer institution in cancer treatment, its diagnosis, prevention and research as well as discovering cancer drugs and saving millions of lives. Funded entirely by the public, it has contributed to help beat cancer and continues to do so, according to the Embassy. According to the Embassy, in the Run the World event, people around the world run, walk or cycle 10km at a same (local) time on a particular day each year. The event proceeds from the East to West with many countries participating in the run over a period of 24 hours. The Challenge started from 2012 Olympic Challenge where Thompson took part in a total of 114 events like high dive, white water canoeing, road cycle, marathon and pole vault et cetera in Olympic and Paralympic events. Thompson has already run in 60 countries of Africa, Asia, South America and Europe. He also undertook the Take12 Challenge, funded by the London Legacy Development Corporation to inspire people in the Olympic to be more active, along with2014 Challenge to celebrate 2014 Commonwealth Games.
