SC tells government to enact privacy law

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a directive order to the government telling it to enact a new law to govern the process of seeking individuals’ personal details while carrying out investigations. A division bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha and Justice Debendra Gopal Shrestha issued the order in a writ petition filed by Freedom Forum Chair Taranath Dahal. The  apex court bench also ordered the government to enact a law on how investigating authorities should act while seeking personal phone call details, how the right to information should be exercised, what should be the limit of exercising right to information, how the investigating authorities could be made accountable while seeking information, who should have access to personal information, and what compensation should be provided to the individuals in case their privacy is violated.
