Kathmandu, March 11 Newly elected President of the Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba today said his party was not in a hurry to take leadership of the government and that the current government would fall under its own weight. Talking to reporters during an interaction organised by the Reporters Club at his Budhanilkantha-based residence today, Deuba said his party would play the role of a strong opposition instead. A weak opposition makes the ruler autocratic, while strong opposition strengthens democracy, he said, ruling out the possibility of NC joining the government led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Deuba said his focus would be on leading the nation towards prosperity by encouraging foreign investment and resolving the issue of provincial boundaries. He asked how he would resolve the issues being raised by the agitating Madhesi parties, Deuba said he would hold dialogues with them and even take initiatives to amend the constitution, if needed. On relations with immediate neighbours, Deuba said friends could be changed but not the neighbours. “We have no option other than mending ties with both our neighbours India and China,” he said. Deuba said NC would keep pressurising the government through Parliament and other forums to end growing black-marketing of essential commodities and expedite reconstruction of infrastructures destroyed in the earthquakes last year. Claiming that Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar was innocent, Deuba said someone might have incited her to stall the decision of the Judicial Council. He said the Speaker should not interfere in the activities of the Judicial Council. “She holds a highly respectable position and therefore she should not interfere in the activities of other bodies but instead play the role of a guardian,” said Deuba, adding that he would discuss the issue with Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. He also urged the Speaker to focus on formation of Parliamentary Hearing Committee and formulation of parliament regulations. Deuba said he would rather say that he was given the responsibility of party president instead of saying he had emerged victorious in the general convention. He said Ramchandra Paudel had always been his good friend and had been very supportive of him. He said nobody should be afraid now that he had become the party president and urged all party leaders and cadres to feel free to come up with their issues. “I won’t let any leader feel that they have been discriminated and would unite the party,” he said.
