KATHMANDU: The main opposition party in the Parliament, Nepali Congress, would elect its new parliamentary party leader on April 6. The position is vacant after demise of the then party President Sushil Koirala on February 9. A meeting of the election committee formed to hold election of the parliamentary party decided to hold the poll on April 6. According to the panel's decision, those aspiring to be chief of the parliamentary party have to file their nominations a day earlier. Committee member Surendra Pandey said a meeting will decide the detailed time table of voting and vote counting tomorrow. The position is considered significant as the winner will also get an ex-officio berth in the Constitutional Council as the chief of the opposition party. The party would elect office bearers of the parliamentary party on April 8, according to the election committee. It is likely that party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel would vie for the top post. In the party presidential election during the party's 13th national general convention held in early March, Deuba had defeated Paudel. (With inputs from the Rastriya Samachar Samiti)
