Minors left to fend for themselves

By Himalayan News Service

Bajura, April 21 Two minors of Bahrabisa VDC, Bajura have been facing difficulty managing even two square meals a day after their father’s death. Their father was the sole breadwinner in their family. Their mother Surja Kumal also fell sick after her husband Gacche Kumal died a month ago. A local Monaj Kumal said that the minors Padam, 12 and Nirajan, 10 stay hungry most of the days as there is no one in the family to earn for them. Nirajan and Padam are third and fourth graders at a local Girikhelne Primary School, but they hardly attend school. Monaj said the minors were compelled to work as domestic helps in their neighbour’s houses for daily meals. “We have no land for farming. So we work at neighbour’s houses and nearby markets for food,” said Padam. Surja has been suffering from fever and cold and is not even able to work for food. Padam, however, continues to work at his neighbours’ for food. Meanwhile, head teacher at the school Dharma Raj Shah said both the minors were very good in their studies. “But they are unable to attend school due to the extreme poverty,” he added. Shah further said that the minors had attended the school on the regular basis when their father was alive. “Their future has become uncertain after their father’s death,” he informed. It is said most children from Dalit families in the district are unable to attend school due to extreme poverty. Head teacher Shah appealed for help from government and non-government organisations to support the minors.
