KATHMANDU, MARCH 12
Three Nepali nationals who had been taken to Myanmar and forced to work in illegal online scam centres have been rescued and repatriated to Nepal, the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok said on Wednesday.
According to a press release issued by the embassy, the rescue was carried out with the coordination and support of authorities in Myanmar and Thailand.
The three individuals were rescued from Myawaddy in Myanmar and flown back to Nepal from Bangkok, Thailand, on Nepal Airlines flight RA402 on Wednesday.
The embassy said the Nepali citizens had travelled to Myanmar through various channels after being lured by promises of lucrative employment and were subsequently forced to work in illegal online scamming operations.
The embassy has urged Nepali citizens to seek official labour approval before going abroad for employment and warned against travelling to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand under the pretext of tourism in pursuit of quick earnings.
It also requested the media and civil society organisations to help raise public awareness about such risks and discourage people from falling victim to fraudulent overseas job offers.
