Kalo Pothi Genre: Drama Director: Min Bahadur Bham Cast: Khadka Raj Nepali, Sukra Raj Rokaya, Jit Bahadur Malla, Hasha Khadka, Benisha Hamal et cetera Being screened at theatres near you Kathmandu The decade-long civil war in the country has had an effect on people’s life. Thousands were killed during the war, many were displaced from their homes and villages and thousands lost their loved ones. Telling the same story of People’s War on screen, director Min Bahadur Bham brings forth the grim picture of war in Kalo Pothi. Addressing the issues during the Maoist insurgency, the movie is best in its narration, acting, background score and in the use of local vernacular. One needs to read the subtitles, yet it doesn’t tire the audience. Rather, the film justifiably presents a local story in the local language. The movie narrates the story of two childhood friends Prakash (Khadka Raj Nepali) and Kiran (Sukra Raj Rokaya) living in a village in Mugu. The film’s journey begins with the journey of these two boys to find Prakash’s missing hen. As these boys have started sensing changes in their village, what fate do they meet during their journey? Divided by caste, do they ever become able to maintain their bond of friendship? Will they ever find the hen? One needs to watch the movie holding his/her breath till the end. A mixture of tragedy and comedy, while portraying the brother-sister bond, friendship, caste-based discrimination and the then time of Maoist insurgency in the country, Kalo Pothi has been made with finesse. Nepali and Rokaya are best in their roles. They make one laugh and feel emotional throughout with their performances in the movie. Sounds of gunfire and news reading in the background justify the film’s content. If you are looking for a trend-setting Nepali movie, then Kalo Pothi cannot be missed as such movies are rarely made in the industry. Book the tickets right now!
