KATHMANDU: Police on Friday apprehended a man on charge of swindling six students of Rs 278,000, promising them that he would send them to the US in quota of earthquake survivors. The suspect has been identified as Siddhartha Karki (27) of Thecho-9, Lalitpur. Karki allegedly posed himself as a staffer of the US Embassy to win trust of the gullible students. He had told the students that he would send them to the US for less than Rs 400,000 each, according to police. Later, Karki collected Rs 76,500 and Rs 150,000 respectively from Prakash Karki and Madan Pokharel as a processing charge for the visas. As Karki went out of contact after taking the money, the victims resorted to police. Based on the complaint filed against him at the the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, a police team deployed from the MPCD nabbed Karki from Mulpani, on the outskirts of Kathmandu, today. He has been sent to the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, for investigation, the MPCD said.
