CPN-MC to form central committee of 151 members

Kathmandu, June 27 The CPN Maoist Centre is discussing strengthening its organisational structure and forming a 151-member central committee from the unity national convention. Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had stalled his scheduled Australia visit at the eleventh hour to focus on organisational setting of the party. According to the report presented by a taskforce led by leader Barshaman Pun, the party will hold its unity national convention by mid-March next year. The report has proposed different layers of party committees – cell committee, ward committee, village committee, city/municipal committee, district committee, Pradesh committee and central committee. In its effort to democratise the party, the report has proposed secret elections of all committees if they failed to finalise them unanimously. In May 2014, the party had exercised election of the party’s office bearers, standing committee and politburo despite criticism from different sections of society, besides the party’s erstwhile leader Baburam Bhattarai and his supporters regarding procedure. The party has divided the responsibilities of different leaders. Former General Secretary of the party Ram Bahadur Thapa will lead the organisational department and the central party office, former Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha will lead the schooling department with Mani Thapa and Lekhnath Neupane as members, Dev Prasad Gurung will lead the Indigenous Nationalities Department with Gopal Kirati and Suresh Ale Magar as members. Spokesperson Pampha Bhusal will lead Publicity department, Leelamani Pokhrel will lead Water Resources Department, Production, Cooperation and Tourism Department has been allocated to Lokendra Bista Magar and Discipline Department for Amik Sherchan. The party has also formed a Local Development Restructuring Committee under the leadership of Dev Prasad Gurung with Barshaman Pun, Gopal Kirati, Biswobhakta Dulal, Urmila Aryal, Hitman Shakya, Pravu Sah, Goma Kunwar and Janak Budha as members. Jayapuri Gharti will look after workers’ front, Haribol Gajurel will look after peasants and squatters, Tilak Pariyar will lead the Dalits, Mani Thapa will lead the youths, Hitman Shakya - students, Biswobhakta Dulal will lead the cultural committee, Narayan Sharma - lecturers and Dinanath Sharma will lead the intellectuals’ front of the party.
