Kathmandu, September 22:

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ramesh Nath Pandey has told the international community at the 60th session of the United Nations general assembly that the lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue based on trust and confidence. “Any overture must be credible and sincere enough to dispel all doubts and suspicions surrounding it,” the minister said , adding that the Nepal government was trying to work with all constitutional forces to bring about peace and stability in the country. Addressing the 60th session of UNGA yesterday, he appealed to the international community to understand human rights situation in Nepal in the context of unabated violence perpetrated by the terrorists.

“The terrorists have exceeded all norms and values by resorting to the most henious acts of violence, indiscriminate killings, maiming and abduction of innocent civilians, kidnapping and forceful recruitment of children as soldiers and extortion and intimidation to the civilian population,” said Pandey. He stressed the need for combating terrorism resolutely, firmly, comprehensively and without any double standards and selective interpretation. According to Nepal’s Permanent Mission in New York, Pandey sought support from the member states to Nepal’s candidature to a non-permanent membership of the Security Council for the period 2007-2008. Minister Pandey also expressed his hope that a lasting solution to Bhutanese refugee problem in Nepal will be found by implementing the previously reached agreements in the bilateral process.
