Kathmandu, August 10 The election committee of the Nepali Congress on Wednesday decided to hold election for new leadership of Nepal Student Union on August 13. The three-day 11th national general convention Nepal Students’ Union had kicked off on August 7, but the student body had failed to hold its closed session due to disputes over selection of convention representatives. As a result, the closed session was delayed by two days. As some NSU cadres had been staging hunger strike for the last two weeks demanding lawful convention, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had formed a five-member panel headed by the party’s Central Working Committee member Prakash Sharan Mahat to resolve the disputes. Disputes over selection of convention representatives had been continuing since long in 11 districts, including Bhaktapur, Rautahat, Parsa, Solukhumbu, Siraha and some colleges in the Valley. The NSU convention has not been held since the unification between the establishment and the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led factions of the party. As both factions want edtheir majority in NSU, cadres backed by their leaders had been obstructing the convention. However, leaders sorted out the dispute over convention representatives late night yesterday by including new representatives from striking NSU cadres’ side. Now, more than 3,400 convention representatives will participate in the convention. UP Lamichhane, spokesperson, NSU, said the list of voters would be published tomorrow and nomination for various posts would be filed on August 12. Voting and vote counting will take place on August 13. He further said that since the Bhrikutimandap hall was booked for a few days, remaining activities of the general convention would take place at NC office in Sanepa, Lalitpur. NSU convention has not been held since 2007.
