KATHMANDU: Election for the new central committee of the Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Students Union (NSU) has become uncertain once again as a faction backed by party's senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel claimed the voter list was rigged by another faction. Earlier, the voter list was published on Saturday evening and the poll was scheduled for Tuesday. Seven leaders of the union, claiming themselves to be presidential candidates, issued a statement today and urged the Election Committee to remove fake names included in the voter list and publish the corrected list at the earliest. They have warned of a protest if the list was not immediately corrected. The signatories include Manoj Mani Acharya, Padam Raj Panta, Nilakantha Rijal, Deepak Bhattarai, Binita Adhikari, Ananda Raj Tripathi and Kshitij Bhandari. They have claimed that around 300 names were randomly added in the list by the leaders backed by party President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Meanwhile, the five-member Directive Committee formed by the NC has been divided over the issue. Two members of the panel - Govinda Bhattarai and Guru Raj Ghimire - also issued a statement today and demanded that the polling process be resumed only after correcting the name list. The 11th general convention of NSU had kicked off in the Capital on August 7. It was scheduled to conclude in three days. However, the process has been stalled as disputes surfaced in the names of convention representatives. The mother party has been intervening in the affair via the Directive Committee headed by Central Working Committee member Prakash Sharan Mahat in a bid to solve the issues and conclude the convention with an election to the new committee. Nomination timetable deferred after clash Meanwhile, the Election Committee deferred the timetable set for filing nominations for various positions. Earlier, the nomination filing was fixed for 3 to 6 pm today. But now, the candidates are required to file their nominations from 8 to 11 am tomorrow, according to the Committee Coordinator Bharat Prasad Kharel. Earlier, a clash ensued between police personnel and NSU cadres at the NC central office in Sanepa of Lalitpur this afternoon. The nomination and voting were scheduled to be held at the Sanepa office.
