NHRC urges Maoists to respect human rights

Kathmandu, October 7:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today called on the Maoists to immediately free those in their captivity and stop extortion, torture and respect human rights and international humanitarian laws.

The Maoists abducted 16-year-old Anjana Misra and Kamala Subedi VDC of Panchthar district on August 21. Likewise, Santosh Rai, Phurtiman Rai, Sanche Rai, Thalman Rai and Bhuwan Rai of Narayansthan VDC, Okhaldhunga were kidnapped on September 28.

The rebels abducted Ram Raghubir Yadav of Golbazaar VDC, Siraha district, on March 25 and Narendra Angbo, regional elected member of area number 4 of Panchthar district on September 25. Around 109 students and teachers of Sotang VDC, Solukhumbhu district were recently abducted and tortured, said a NHRC statement. Five teachers including the headmaster of Kalika School in Balakoch VDC, Khotang district were also abducted. Their whereabouts are unknown.

The NHRC has received complaints concerning threats, extortion in Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, and Terhathum, the statement said, adding, the Maoists are threatening security forces’ families.
