U-17 team enter final

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Under-17 team beat Army Boys 1-0 and entered the final of the Subroto Mukerjee Cup Football Tournament, which has been organised by Subroto Mukerjee Education foundation, in New Delhi today. Skipper Ranjeet Shrestha scored the only goal of the match in penalty, taking his personal tally to 10 goals, including two hat-tricks in six matches. The U-17 team will play Chandigarh in final on October 13. The other Nepali team, which is there to defend the Under-14 title, entered the semi-finals on Saturday. — HNS

Davenport wins

FILDERSTADT: Lindsay Davenport picked up her 50th career title at the Porsche Grand Prix with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Amelie Mauresmo. The American, who became the ninth player to reach the milestone, relied on her big serve against Mauresmo, a player she has now beaten 10 straight times. Davenport won the $650,000 event for the third time after 2001 and 2004. The American won her fifth title this year and is in a close race with top-ranked Maria Sharapova and third-ranked Kim Clijsters to become the year-end leading player. — AP

Krajicek bags title

TASHKENT: Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, the fifth seed at the $140,000 Tashkent Open tennis tournament, grabbed her first career WTA title, beating Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan in the final here on Sunday. The 16-year-old Krajicek won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in one hour, 41 minutes to record a win over Amanmuradova in their first ever meeting. Krajicek, who is 82nd in the WTA rankings, was in command right from the start, taking the opening set to love in 21 minutes. — AFP
