Nepal falter against Palestine, fail to qualify for AFC U-16 Championship 2018

KATHMANDU: Nepal failed to quality for AFC U-16 Championship 2018 as they stuttered against Palestine 2-1 in the final group game played at the Halchowk Stadium in Kathmandu, on Sunday. With today's result, Nepal languishes at the bottom with a solitary point in Group D of the campaign. Iraq top the group with 7 points followed by India with five. Nepal and Palestine played a dead rubber after the top-topper Iraq were held to a goalless draw by India in today's encounter. Iraq have qualified for the AFC U-16 Championship 2018 to be held in the Malaysia next year. India have qualified as the top five runner-ups in the qualifiers for the Championship. The hosts Nepal failed to salvage a pride as they succumbed to 2-1 defeat to Palestine in today's encounter after playing a 2-2 draw against India in their earlier game. Striker Brijesh Chaudhary broke the deadlock on the 10th minute courtesy of a penalty kick. Nepal were awarded the penalty kick after Palestine defender Muath Barhoush hauled down Akash Budha Magar in the D-box area. However, Palestine midfielder Mahmound Wridat brace in the 28th and 75th minute sealed the much need victory to the visiting team at the expense of host Nepal. Earlier, Nepal faced 1-0 defeat at the hand of Iraq.
