NRNA Japan general secy Thapa arrested for fraud

Kathmandu, October 14 Police have arrested Anuj Thapa, general secretary of Non-Resident Nepali Association Japan, for allegedly defrauding Japanese professors of Rs 70 million purportedly for the establishment of branch of a Japanese university in Nepal. A source at Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, said Thapa was arrested on Thursday after he arrived here from Japan to attend the eighth NRNA Global Conference. The Japanese professor (name undisclosed) also followed Thapa to Kathmandu after coming to know that he will be attending the conference and filed a ‘fraud complaint’ with MPR against him. The source informed that Kathmandu District Court had remanded him to judicial custody for further investigation into the case. The complaint filed by the Japanese professor said, “Thapa embezzled the amount and used it for his private purpose without even initiating the process for opening a branch of the Japanese university.” Earlier, Thapa had lived in Nepal for months by giving out his Tokyo-based restaurant on lease after the professors asked him to refund the money. Thapa is also a representative of for Japan.
