CNP rescues one-horned rhino, yet to rescue rhino cow, calf pair

CHITWAN: Another one-horned rhino that was swept across the border to India by flooding has been rescued unharmed. The endangered rhino — 10th one to be rescued — was swept away by the flood and transported to 40 kilometres south of the Nepal-India border. The mature rhino was rescued from Piprasi of India and brought to its habitat in the Chitwan National Park (CNP) on Sunday, according to the CNP chief conservation officer Ramchandra Kandel. According to Kandel, six elephants along with the technical team and security personnel were dispatched to India to rescue the pachiderms. Indian authority also joined the Nepali team to assist in the rescue operation, added Kandel. The rescue teams were unable to take the rhino under control two days before. They successfully darted the rhino with tranquiliser and brought back to CNP the following day. The team was dispatched to India on Saturday to bring back rhino after they failed to rescue a rhino cow and its calf in Triveni area of Nawalpur, despite four consecutive days' efforts. According to the CNP chief Khanal, the team will be re-engaged in rescuing the rhino cow and its calf. Meanwhile, the rhino pair is under the observation of CNP personnel.
