Kathmandu, March 15 Police have arrested an organiser of a television dance reality show for allegedly defrauding participants and their guardians of cash on the pretext of audition and prize money. Bikram Achhami, 29, of Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu, was nabbed from Bagbazar yesterday. Superintendent of Police Nagendra Prasad Upreti at Metropolitan Police Crime Division said Achhami organised the reality show ‘Dance Nepal Dance’ and swindled the contestants and their guardians of hundreds of thousands of rupees. According to MPCD, Achhami ran a dance institute ‘V and Virus Dance Academy’ through which he organised the show and telecast it through various TV channels. He auditioned around 300 contestants in the first season of the show that began on June 10, 2011, and 400 contestants in the second season from August 11, 2016. He, however, did not provide cash prize to the winners. He had charged Rs 500 from each participant for the submission of audition form. “Achhami announced a cash prize of Rs 100,000 to the winner of the first season of the show. Likewise, he promised to provide Rs 250,000 to the winner, Rs 100,000 to the first runner-up and Rs 18,000 to second runner-up of the second season. But he did not provide them the prize money,” MPCD said. He had also assured the winners of providing jobs in various places and promised to make the contestants win through SMS voting and collected money from their guardians in the name of voting for them. Achhami also distributed the audition forms to students in various schools and collected huge amount of money from their guardians. Police said around 15 victims had filed complaints against him. As per the laws, he will be slapped up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine equivalent to Rs 5,000, if convicted.
