KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress has appointed three office bearers on Friday. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba picked Bimalendra Nidhi as Vice-President, Purna Bahadur Khadka as General Secretary and Prakash Sharan Mahat as Joint General Secretary during the party's Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at party office, Sanepa, Lalitpur. President Deuba was supposed to nominate the names for these posts within two months from the general convention. However, it took 26 months post the convention of the party for the appointment of the aforementioned officer bearers. All three newly elected officials of the party had suffered defeats in federal parliament elections held on November and December of 2017. Nidhi had vied in the election from Dhanusha Constituency-1, Khadka from Surkhet-1 and Mahat from Kathmandu-5. Party President Deuba made the appointments amid serious objections by a faction led by NC senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel. According to a source present in the CWC meeting, the Poudel faction boycotted the meeting citing that the appointment was against the Party's statute and process. Moreover, members of Poudel led faction have demanded annulment of party's parliamentary board and central work execution committee remarking that these bodies were against party's statue. In spite of the objections, Nidhi garnered majority support from the CWC members ensuring his appointment to the post of Party Vice-President. The party statute Article 21 has a provision allowing formation of an 85-member central committee in which the president, a general secretary and a treasurer are elected prior to the appointment of a vice-president, a general secretary, a joint general secretary and other members by the party president.
