KATHMANDU, MARCH 3

The Election Commission (EC) has sought clarifications from 95 election candidates and political parties over violations of the code of conduct in effect for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

A total of 454 complaints have been received so far by the EC. Among those from whom clarifications were sought, 62 have submitted responses, while six have been asked to provide justifications again, according to Sita Pun Shreesh, Assistant Spokesperson at the EC.

Of the six candidates questioned for violating the election code, five have responded. Additionally, the EC has taken action against eight individuals for failing to submit adequate clarifications.

In addition to political parties and their candidates, journalists, media houses, and government and non-government organizations were also asked to provide clarifications in response to complaints lodged against them. The EC wrote to Press Council Nepal, the media content monitoring agency, instructing it to take action against registered media outlets and journalists found violating the election code.

The news portal Setopati.com was specifically asked for clarification through Press Council Nepal after it conducted a poll and published analyses predicting the likely victory of certain candidates.

Complaints are also being received and processed at the district level.
