KATHMANDU:The country is marking Law Day today to commemorate establishment of an autonomous and independent judiciary in 1951. Prompt delivery of justice is a must to promote rule of law in the country. According to former chief justice Kalyan Shrestha, the day is marked to evaluate the judiciary’s performance. He said speedy delivery of justice was a must for democracy to function properly. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang said since the country had now adopted federal system of governance, different laws should be enacted to implement federalism. The government has intensified the process of drafting laws by forming a committee led by Attorney General Agni Kharel. Legal practitioners have expressed concern about frequent attacks on the judiciary. Independence of judiciary means it should not be controlled by either the executive or the legislature. It must be allowed to function freely without any interference.
