KATHMANDU: A 37-year old Sherpa climber has become the youngest mountaineer in the world to successfully scale the world's highest mountain for the 21st time. Ngima Nuru Sherpa from Teso village near Namche Bazaar, Solukhumbu, along with other climbers reached the summit point of Mt Everest from Tibet side, the expedition organiser said. “Born on November 6, 1981, Ngima Nuru stood atop the roof of the world from the North Col at 5:30 am on May 16,” Thupden Sherpa, General Manager at Arun Treks Pvt Ltd told THT. Till date, there are only four climbers including Ngima Nuru who successfully climbed Mt Everest more than 20 times. “However, no other climber below the age of 40 years except Ngima Nuru scaled the mountain for the record 21 times,” Sherpa claimed. The father-of-two first scaled Mt Everest in 2001 from Nepal side. “He made at least nine Everest summits from Nepal side and 12 more from Tibet side,” the record shows. According to Sherpa, Ngima Nuru will continue his climbing bids on Mt Everest in the coming seasons. “He is one of the strongest souls working with Arun Treks since 2000,” Sherpa claimed. According to the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Kami Rita Sherpa (48) holds the world record for most summits on Mt Everest, scaling the world’s highest mountain for 22nd time from Nepal side on May 16. Legendary climbers Apa Sherpa (58) and Phurba Tashi Sherpa (47) retired from high-altitude climbing after scaling Mt Everest for 21 times each in 2011 and 2013 respectively.
