KATHMANDU: The district headquarters of Kanchanpur, Bhimdattanagar remained tense today, the second day in a row as locals took to the streets alleging the authorities of creating a dummy perpetrator in the rape and murder of a 13-year-old teen.
On Tuesday, agitating locals enforced shutdown in Bhimduttanagar Bazaar, protesting police’s failure to reveal facts behind the murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Panta of Kanchanpur’s Bhimdatta Municipality.Organising a press conference on Monday, the District Police Office had made public a 41-year-old man, allegedly of unsound mental condition, as Nirmala’s murderer. However, locals, along with Nirmala's parent suspect a foul play and fear that the real perpetrator is still on the loose.
The locals, today too, chanted protest slogans and gathered afore the Kanchanpur District Administration Office demanding justice for Nirmala. According to Police Spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Bahadur Sethi, police fired 12 shells of teargas to contain the mob. The political parties have agreed to let the victim’s kin press fresh charges on suspects and bring the situation to normal. However, the demonstrations continued second day in a row and no complaints have been made yet, Kumar Khadka, Chief District Officer of Kanchanpur informed. The deceased’s father has accused law enforcement officers of forcing him to press charges against the man who was nabbed earlier. On contrary, security personnel denied the accusations and said that they have asked the victim’s father to file complaints against more suspects, if any.
