Kathmandu, August 26 Hindus celebrated the holy festival of Janai Purnima across the country today. The festival is also known as Shrawani Purnima, Kwati Purnima, Rishi Purnima and Rakshya Bandhan. Devotees received janai or rakshya bandhan or both from priests at home or in temples. Religious belief has it that the thread protects the wearer from the evil. People living in the Tarai region celebrate this day as Rakhi festival for strengthening the bond of love between sisters and brothers. Traditionally, this festival is observed to bid farewell to the rainy season and welcome the winter season.
