Three held with 41 kg marijuana in Saptari

Rajbiraj, February 2 Armed Police Force personnel and marijuana smugglers exchanged fire at Gobargadha of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality, Saptari, yesterday night. APF personnel had opened fire in retaliation when marijuana smugglers opened fire on them while they were trying to smuggle the contraband to India. Three persons, including an Indian national, have been arrested. APF have recovered 41 kilograms of marijuana from their possession. Those arrested are Indian national Uday Mukhiya, Hira Mukhiya and Lalbabu Ray. They had been involved in marijuana smuggling for a long time, police said. Acting on a tip-off that local smugglers were trying to smuggle marijuana to India, a team of APF personnel from APF Gan No 6 were deployed on Friday night. When the APF team reached the incident site, smugglers had opened fire. In retaliation, APF opened fire, according to APF SP Khem Bahadur Thapa. However, no one was injured. Three persons were held, but two others managed to flee the scene taking advantage of darkness, said SP Thapa. The arrestees were handed over to District Police Office Saptari this morning. They would be made public at a press meet tomorrow, said Saptari police Chief Superintendent of Police Rajendra Bista. Marijuana smuggling from Nepal to India has increased of late. Nepal police and APF have expedited surveillance along Nepal-India border to check smuggling of the contraband, said SP Bista.
