Kathmandu, March 5 Police arrested two women with a huge cache of US dollars being smuggled into Thailand from Tribhuvan International Airport yesterday. The dollar smuggling suspects are Sarala Khadka and Rinku Gurung of Kathmandu. The duo were heading to board a Nepal Airlines flight bound for Bangkok when they were found concealing the undeclared foreign currency notes worth 65,550 USD in their handbags during a security screening at baggage area of Tribhuban International Airport. According to police, 35,650 USD was seized from Khadka and 33,900 USD from Gurung. Police said they were trying to establish the source from where they received the dollars and the purpose of smuggling them into Bangkok. Both of them have been referred to the Department of Revenue Investigation for further inquiry and legal action. If statistics released by the Ministry of Home Affairs are something to go by, smuggling of foreign currencies, especially USD, abroad is rife. Police have seized as much as 344,475 USD in the past one year. Nepalis and Chinese citizens account for the highest number of smugglers. Similarly, 3,800 euros, 1,000 pounds, 40,000 UAR dirham and 38,000 Chinese yuan were also confiscated. Officials said 36 persons were arrested with illegal foreign currencies in the past one year.
