Kathmandu, September 23 The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) is preparing to change Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign leadership. As the ministry has been unsatisfied with the work progress of VNY and the VNY preparations are being criticised from all sections, the ministry is preparing to change the leadership of the campaign. According to MoCTCA source, Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai is not very happy with the work of Suraj Vaidya, the VNY 2020 campaign coordinator. “VNY is a very important event for the country’s tourism sector. However, the campaign itself is being criticised from all sectors and the minister is also not so satisfied with the modus operandi of the VNY coordinator,” the MoCTCA source said. “Hence, either the coordinator will be changed or the government will designate the executive power at VNY committee to someone else.” The MoCTCA source further said that the ministry has received several complaints regarding weak preparations for VNY campaign that is only three months away. During a press meet on September 21, Minister Bhattarai had said, “VNY is being criticised massively. And one can give up if the person is unable to fulfil the given responsibility.” Similarly, during the fourth meeting of the main committee of VNY, provincial tourism ministers had criticised that the planned VNY programmes were Valley-centric. A few months back also lawmakers had criticised the VNY work progress and directed the tourism minister to accelerate the works of VNY. Meanwhile, tourism entrepreneurs are also not satisfied with the preparations for VNY. Talking to The Himalayan Times, Ambica Shrestha, a tourism entrepreneur, said that the concerned authorities had failed to introduce new local destinations for the VNY. “Nepal is full of natural, historical and cultural resources. However, VNY campaign has failed to come up with destinations beyond Kathmandu, Pokhara, Sauraha and Lumbini,” she said. It would be better if the VNY would have brought new programmes by introducing fresh destinations to attract tourists, she added. Moreover, VNY Coordinator Vaidya has also been criticised for not giving enough time for programme preparations, not attending meetings and not being present during different ceremonies.
